A Life-Cycle Approach of Recycled Materials in Infrastructure Rehabilitation

Description: _x000D_ _x000D__x000D_The future of engineering will become highly reliant on the use of_x000D_recycled materials to balance the use of virgin materials and sustain_x000D_resources. Altering the current design policies and practices will_x000D_require substantial evidence in the performance and cost of recycled_x000D_materials. Research has shown that materials like recycled asphalt_x000D_pavement (RAP) and recycled rubber can be integrated into new_x000D_pavement projects with comparable or better expected performance to_x000D_traditional design. To determine the long term cost effects of_x000D_recycled materials in pavement design, a manual life-cycle cost_x000D_analysis is implemented to three roadway alternatives. Each_x000D_alternative is subject to a performance prediction model which allows_x000D_the planning of maintenance and rehabilitation strategies for the_x000D_service life of the road. The present value of each alternative is_x000D_found, and the RAP is shown to be a more cost-effective means to a_x000D_road project than that of a traditional project._x000D_
