Description: The module serves as an introduction to the concepts of sustainable development, sustainable engineering, and public domain software and databases for life cycle inventory (i.e., estimating emissions and other environmental impacts), all using the example of concrete. The module is aimed at sophomore level science and engineering majors who have had freshman chemistry and, ideally, some introduction to quantitative problem solving. Topics such as the concrete life cycle are introduced, and example problems (in class and homework) that illustrate the concepts are given. In addition to introducing these topics, the module requires students to become familiar with and exploit library resources for finding journal articles on topics of interest.
