Description: Materials & Mechanics is generally taken in the junior year and is a core course within the curriculum of the Department of Engineering (Madison Engineering Department) at James Madison University. The course is structured with two emphases: Mechanics (generally 1st in the sequence) and Materials. The course explores the governing principles of materials science and the mechanics of materials to provide students with a working foundation for the engineering design process. The module was created to be used in the Materials portion of the class but also could be appropriate within other engineering and science disciplines (i.e. civil engineering, environmental engineering, physics, and chemistry). The module was crafted to reinforce the concept of real design limitations in regards to material selection that could be leveraged by students when creating sustainable design solution concepts.
