The Sustainability Footprint Model

Description: _x000D_ The heart of sustainable development lies in the ability to secure a progressively better quality of life for communities while preserving the natural assets that contribute inputs and absorb the byproducts of development. Because different regions around the world may have different regional development priorities, it is reasonable to expect that they could also have different priorities when they consider sustainable development. This paper presents the concept of the sustainability footprint and formulates the concept in a model to evaluate how well civil engineering systems are doing with respect to sustainability. The model is applied to data for the Atlanta and Chicago Metropolitan highway systems to illustrate how it can be used to assess progress toward sustainability._x000D_
